Overviews

While production of palm oil is increasing by approximately 10% each year (~1.2 Mtons in 2019), consumption of palm oil FAMEs as biodiesel is somewhat limited these days. This is due to several uncontrolled factors, particularly environmental concerns. As electrical vehicle (EV) seems to be the best choice for future ground transportation, utilization of FAMEs as biodiesel becomes less and less encouraging

Despite an expected decrease in demand for bio-fuel, an increase in the production and stock of palm oil could be a great opportunity for Thailand to establish a Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economy by converting this abundant and valuable bio-derived feedstock into bio-based chemicals such as surfactants, lubricants, nutrients, flavors, fragrances, and pharmaceuticals. In comparison with other biomass-derived feedstocks such as lignocellulose, sugar, and ethanol, palm oil FAMEs possess much higher carbon content. Moreover, its ready availability supports the rationales of using palm oil FAMEs as feedstocks for the sustainable production of bio-derived chemicals in the future

Key Considerations of Symposium

  • Development of novel and effective catalysts to enable the efficient conversion of FAMEs to bio-based chemicals.

  • Sustainable process design with the minimal use of hydrogen and energy, that significantly reduced carbon footprint, wastes, and environmental impact.
